we, the knots

so static the nature
of humanity
a stark contrast
to the natural world
we occupy
we, the knots
constraining us inches
from dynamic change
from the intentional footfalls
of a beautifully divergent
harmony

unspoken barriers

unspoken barriers
to equity
are embedded in the concrete
fence posts
the fabric in which we clothe ourselves
not with the warriors
who brave anger and silence
pound pavement
hold up a mirror
and demand a better life
for even those who condemn them

cordial

if I stand in the middle
of this intersection
with my fist silently raised
in rebellion
will you be as cordial
as when we once
held hands
talking about the idea
of freedom?

again to fight

how many students
have I lied to
about their right to expression
and their ability to be heard?

for this truth, I will find a way again
to fight

I cannot scream louder,
cannot make you listen
but I can act,
and with my body, maybe
you will see yourself
unravelling

this is privilege

It was difficult to process the events that unfolded last night, during and in the wake of the "Ferguson Decision."  So, I did what I do when I can't think...I write poetry.

this is privilege
my city is burning
and I, removed from birthplace,
from the beautiful contours
of conflict and friendship,
am safely tucked away
for the night...
this is privilege.
the internal convulsions
reverberating through my body, seeking sense...
this is a calling
I cannot ignore
but don't know how
to let it escape (act).

i am here

it is time for the poetry
of Ferguson
to emerge
tap logic
on the shoulder, and say
"I am here"

to listen
to speak
to stand up
and help change move forward
