the dream of Oregon

settles back in

I escape bed early

to sit with it

connect it to the grass grown wild

and become irrational

too much water

distant planes and the blast

of a train horn

support the morning chatter

 of Cardinals, pigeons, pileated woodpeckers

and some high-pitched warble

I can't place

I stand in the middle

of what should be a walking path

with a steady current washing

over my feet

stare at yellowed strawberries

stunted cucumbers

and decide to drink coffee

sun crests various rooftops
an urban prism
striking grass and wood floors
morning salutations
replacing the warmth lost
from a writer's coffee, unfinished

tapas
to taste and attempt
some synthesis of completion
a hotel breakfast
leaving me hungry
and in search of good coffee

I continue to sip coffee
after it is cold
too content to give up writing
and risk creaky floorboards

when my feet are tucked
and legs crossed
when my gaze reaches
and sounds drift
when coffee lifts me
or whiskey or love emboldens
every verse is a lattice

or conjure a deep sleep

all of me is attuned

I                spend
my            morning
in a           look        around
when        there       is
coffee       time and
sleeping children

today will be born on the flatbed of a trailer,
hauled across highways and gravel,
but right now there is coffee and bird song,
and I am writing

angled together
contemplate the awakening day
sunday morning ritual
coffee
bird song
and us
